Scratch art illustration is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. Scratchboard refers tp both a fine-art medium and an illustrative technique using tools for engraving into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with dark, often black India ink. Scratchboard can be used to yield highly detailed, precise and evenly textured artwork. Works can be left black and white, or colored. Materials provided. Limited enrollment.
Viorica Stan teaches art and art workshops to grades Kindergarten to12th at the Ideal School of Manhattan. Her mixed-media works capture her fascination with inner fantasy landscapes as well as Hudson Valley's rich light, color and beauty. Awards and scholarships include Seth Tobias Award, Paulette Goddard Scholarship, Westmoreland Art Nationals, and Black and White Award for Excellence. Her work is represented in private collections around the world.

WATERCOLOR WALK, with ANGELA GAFFNEY-SMITH
We will explore: the paint and the landscape. We will use gesture to simplify line and form into bold shapes using brushes larger than half an inch.
Angela Gaffney-Smith is a figurative painter and print-maker, whose current body of work combines original pieces in mixed media. Her collage "Athena Knew Alcyoneus" was recently included in Kotaj Magazine. Angela is the recipient of the Alan Koff and Lucille Blanch Awards for artistic excellence at the Woodstock Artist Association and Museum, in Woodstock, NY. She has taught multi-media workshops through New York State Council on the Arts and Greene County Council on the Arts. NATURE AND POETRY with WILL NIXON
A walk out to the Saugerties Lighthouse with a notebook and pen in hand to see what nature has to teach. We' ll write a poem that stretches our imagination as well as our observation skills. If you can look at an autumn leaf and see a story of life, you can write a poem. "If I were to name the three most precious resources of life I should say books, friends, and nature; and the greatest of these, at least the most constant and always at hand, is nature," wrote John Burroughs, the celebrated Catskills nature writer, a century ago.
Will Nixon and Michael Perkins were recently honored by The Woodstock Land Conservancy for their popular book,WALKING WOODSTOCK: JOURNEYS INTO THE WILD HEART OF AMERICA'S MOST FAMOUS SMALL TOWN. Any and all concerns about screenwriting do’s and don’ts will be left outside the door of this non-screenwriting-but-writing-for-film-workshop. We will be diving enthusiastically into the realm of our watery imaginations. Let’s figure out a way to awaken, support, and cultivate our own voices so we can in turn liberate our own stories.
Katie Cokinos is a writer and director who has made over ten shorts, and a featurette, Portrait of a Girl as a Young Cat (2000), and whose feature film, I Dream Too Much (2016), starred Eden Brolin, Diane Ladd and Danielle Brooks and was filmed in Saugerties. PORTRAIT is available on Vimeo and IDTM is on Netflix. She is presently working on her next project, THE NATURE OF THINGS, also set in Saugerties.

The perfect event for a Fall Foliage Weekend is a celebration of the season’s bounty. That’s why Shout Out Saugerties is hosting a Food & Art Walkabout Saturday, October 20th, as part of its annual festival. Join international culinary travel writer Richard Frisbie in a tour of the best eats in his home town of Saugerties.
The tour will begin at the Farmers Market with an introduction to some of the farmers by the market founder (and NYC’s Greenmarket founder) Barry Benepe. You’ll have a chance to hear from some of the hardest workers on the planet before tasting the fruits of their toil. Their fresh, just-picked-at-the-peak-of-its-flavor produce and tastes from market vendors will give you an insight into why the Hudson Valley is one of the Nation’s finest food baskets.
Then, the tour will stroll through Saugerties Village’s Historic District, noting the art shows in the windows between stops at some of our finest eateries. You’ll sample the region’s bounty in every form as the skilled chefs and bakers share cooking tips, recipes, and their tastiest creations. On the menu you can expect to savor: house-made kielbasa, artisanal beer, local artist-decorated cookies at the Best Bakery in the Hudson Valley, house-smoked brisket sliders, locally made ice cream (Finalist New York State's Best Ice Cream), pizza from one of the Top Ten USA Today New York State Pizzerias, local cheeses and a surprise from a James Beard recognized chef. This is the ultimate foodie tour of Saugerties Village.

Jaime Bernanke and Teresa Giordano are documentary television writers with decades of experience writing and producing all forms of non-fiction television. They’ve worked on long and short form specials and series for various networks including National Geographic, PBS, History Channel, Discovery, Starz, OWN, and A&E.

WRITING THE PERSONAL ESSAY with NANCY KLINE
What do I know? (Que sais-je?) asked Michel de Montaigne, and in an effort to find out, he invented the essay. (Essayer in French translates as “to try” or “to assay.”) In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore what we know and don’t know and didn’t know we knew.
Nancy Klein's short stories, essays, memoirs and translations of modern French poetry have appeared widely. Her personal essay “Missing Paris” appeared in Best Women’s Travel Writing 2011. Writes for The New York Times Sunday Book Review, published nine books. She teaches for the Bard Prison Initiative, Poets & Writers and the Woodstock Library.

Linda Montano, of the shoe-selling Saugerties family, has been a major force in the world of performance art since the early 1970s, when she followed sculpture studies, did a stint as a nun, and completed her MFA at the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a seminal work wherein she bound herself to another person for a full year. Her work as always been about shackles and spirituality. In addition to her tangled relationship with the Catholicism in which she was raised, she has spent much time in Zen monasteries and in a variety of ashrams. Linda Montano lives in Saugerties.
Arm-of-the-Sea Theater is in the process of uncovering and re-purposing the site of an 19th century water-powered Paper Mill on the banks of the Esopus Creek in Saugerties. The site has lain abandon and derelict for more than a half century. Arm-of-the-Sea’s proposed Tidewater Center will transform these mill ruins into a place for performing arts, river ecology and local history.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Roshni Samlal is a New York–based tabla player who hails from the West Indies, where she was initiated into the ancient tradition of Indian classical music by her vocalist father. She has continued her tutelage in the Benares style of tabla playing under Shri Tapan Modak and is currently a student of Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. While her passion is Indian classical tabla, she has played folk, jazz, and other genres. Samlal has performed at notable local venues such as Pianos, The Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, The Shrine, and Tea Lounge.
Camila Celin began playing guitar when she was nine years old. For the last five years she has played the Indian sarod, studying in Kolkata with Sougata Roy Choudhury. She also studies with sitar maestro Pandit Krishna Bhatt in New York.
This concert is a collaboration between Shout Out Saugerties and Isabel Soffer/Live Sounds and Harmonyom.org

Michael Nelson is a professional photographer, and now video producer. He has been photographing for magazines, newspapers, institutions and non-profit groups for 45 years. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, he has taught at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Storm King Art Center, Museum of the Hudson Highlands, Boston Adult Continuing Education, and in his studio in Saugerties, NY. Born in Key West, 90 miles from Cuba, he recently authored a photography book on "Cuba Today" published by Ediciones del Mayab. He just finished a documentary "Why Can't We Serve" on wounded soldiers who were prevented from continuing service in the military.
